I do like watching The Durrells for the 1930s costumes. They are everyday, relaxed, and summery. I enjoyed Indian Summers for the same era – there we had haute couture and a priviledged, aristocratic cast of characters with 1930s evening gowns to drool over, but the Durrells has outfits that people would have worn every day. As someone partial to a bit of vintage sewing, these are the kind of outfits that I might one day like to recreate – if I only had the time! I am a rather slow sewer. Still, these might be rather good inspiration for a 1930s hen party, to go with 1930s hair and make up. Not many people choose 1930s as a hen party theme but perhaps we can change this if I whet your appetite for the clothing?
I love the 1930s straight, high waisted day dress that Louisa wears here.
Perhaps this could be recreated if you adapted this McCalls 1930s day dress pattern (I have this in my pattern stash, all ready to go!). Or this 1930s Button Dress by Decades of Style.
Here are the pattern links! So that the keen sewists amongst you might recreate them. There are also many original 1930s patterns to be bought online.

Here is a rather fantastic rundown of the 1930s reproduction patterns available, by Vintage Dancer.
Have a look at Margo Durrell’s fantastic wool swimsuit too. I love it! And her vintage blouse and sash that she wears around her hair. I do have some fantastic 1930s fabric that I’d like to recreate this with. Now to find the perfect pattern…
McCalls m7056 is really rather good.

Hmmm.. food for thought, and we’d better all get sewing…
